For a class in my major called Rapid Visualization, we were asked to do a material study that could be taken in whatever direction we desired. I, knowing very little about the production of clothing or fashion design in general, chose to challenge myself by creating a line of unwearable swimsuits.
Like most Academy project prompts, this one was very open ended: make something out of physical materials. I wanted to stretch my abilities and take up sewing. To learn how to work with a large variety of fabrics, I decided to make a line of unwearables -- or swimsuits made out of fabrics that probably wouldn't hold up in the water if used as actual swimwear. For fabrics, I used everything from suede to flannel to hemp.
